NPD reports that for the first time in several years, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has earned first place in the monthly gaming console sales rankings. The 360 moved 422,000 units. Meanwhile, over in Japan, Sony’s PSP go continues to be a disaster, with 3-month sales totals of only 17,618 handhelds. More »

The Wall Street Journal cites a close source that claims Sony is plotting to take a big bite out of Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Supposedly, a PSP Phone and an iPad-like e-reader/tablet are in development. More »

While Rob Dyer at SCEA did not actually use the term “overpriced” to describe the PSPgo, he did admit that “the higher price point” of the unit compared to the regular PSP has not helped “matters any.” The PSPgo has been a sales dud, but Sony and its third party publishers have some triple A titles on schedule for this year in hopes of boosting sales. From Wirebot:
By now we’ve all heard what the analysts and game developers think about the iPad, but what about the gamers? How do are we feel about the new tablet? We are thrilled, or at least should be. Since forever clever gamers have been taking apart their coveted consoles and resembling them into more compact shells so they can take their gaming on the road without suffering the drawbacks and limitations that come along with a portable gaming system. Most of the time these contraptions become pieces of fanboy high art, being much too bulky for logical usage. With the iPad, Apple has simplified our vision and gathered support from many developers. I was somewhat surprised with the PSP Go’s launch. It was not the device that was unexpected but rather its price and form factor. Usually, when a portable gaming machine (or a console) has been out for years, a company improves it while lowering prices. Instead, Sony went an unconventional route and radically altered the PSP’s functionality by releasing the PSP Go, which removed the ability to play hundreds of existing UMD-only games that millions of PSP owners already have in their collection. In addition to this bizarre move, Sony also made the PSP Go a “premium” PSP and decided to sell it for substantially more than the standard unit. More »
The PSP-Go debuted last week, and much to the Sony’s dismay, it received horrible reviews. I still get the feeling it won’t stop many from actually buying the slimmer portable device. On my way to the office the other day, I saw a teenage kid with the new PSP-GO, playing a game while crossing the streets of NYC.
Before we get into some of the reviews, one thing Sony has to factor in for sales, especially if they’re low, is that many teenagers, including some adults, do not have wireless capabilities at home. While they may have DSL and high speed internet service, wireless is not something they use or have ever really cared to pay for. I know many people, even my friends, who own desktop computers and never had the need for a wireless signal. While the idea for an all wireless device was great, Sony forgot about those who may want the device but can’t use the services because they don’t have wireless capabilities. For Sony’s sake, let’s hope this doesn’t stop people from buying the device.
So let’s get onto some of the reviews: More »
Today is the official day of the PSP Go release. It wasn’t hard to tell, Sony has been airing commercials about the new portable gaming system for the past few days and there ads posted on bus stops and train stations across NYC.
I owned a PSP a few years ago and can’t see myself owning a PSP Go. The price is too expensive ($250) for an all digital portal gaming system (just think the PS3 Slim is only $300). But there are those out there that will buy it and will enjoy it. I’m just not going to be one of those people.
Are you going to buy the PSP GO? Do you think it’s too expensive for an all digital portable system or is it the right price compared to other all digital gadgets?
The guys at iFixit have gone at it again and disassembled a gadget. This time it is the yet-to-be-released Sony PSP Go. In their usual fashion, they include instructions for every step and identify each part and microchip.
During the teardown, they discovered that the internal battery is more capacious that the ones found in the older PSP and iPod touch. Though not officially user replaceable, it is easy to replace. Internal storage is provided by a single 16GB Samsung NAND chip. Remember, this thing lacks a UMD slot. Hopefully 16GB will be enough. In terms of wireless connectivity, the PSP Go has Bluetooth and rather archaic 802.11b.
Click through for the entire teardown; but if you couldn’t be bothered, we’ve embedded a video of the whole process.

The new PSP Go is getting backlash from its fans after Sony Executive, Andrew House said the PSP Go was priced because it’s new and deserves the “premium” label.
According to reports out of UK retailers, they have not received any pre-orders for the PSP Go, Sony’s new portable gaming console. More »
