I feel for Jon Rubinstein. His company was the pioneer of the smartphone forerunner, the PDA (although Apple’s Newton started it all). In the late 1990s, Palm was an enviable company, but its failure to transition (successfully) its products to the smartphone market has doomed the once glorious creator of numerous beloved PDAs. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 presentation today unveiled nothing that has not been widely rumored for months: there will be no multitasking; Microsoft’s Marketplace store is the only way to obtain WM7 apps; HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to WM7. In a nutshell, Microsoft is following the strictly isolationist iPhone instead of open source Android (surprise!). In more cheerful news, Samsung, Asus, and LG all demoed WM7 devices. More »

I love the idea of 3D, especially for sports, but in all of the 3D hype, Hollywood and entertainment corporations want us to forget the sobering truth that mediocre music, television, and movies are still going to be mediocre even if they are in 3D. More »

Samsung’s “Super” AMOLED screens promise to be brighter than normal AMOLED and, more importantly, have touch sensors built into the panel instead of added on as an additional layer like most LCDs and all AMOLED screens. More »

On March 10 (that’s right! WEDNESDAY!), over 200 Best Buy stores across the United States will be launching their 3D television lines. More »

From Htcyou: MobileSyrup has the Rogers branded unit in its hands (likely from a Best Buy employee). The mid-range Samsung Galaxy Spica should be hitting store shelves in a few weeks, but no prices have been published. Based on the Telus Motorola Milestone’s release, I would expect Rogers to sell the Galaxy Spica for well under $600, but who knows? More »

CES 2010 featured the latest and hottest new gadgets. One of the more popular trends was the rise of the 3D television. Samsung has officially kick-started its first LCD 3D TV for mass production. More »

Samsung’s LD220G is a unique monitor. It uses Samsung’s UbiSync to connect a computer to it by USB, making the LapLift a transportable LCD, secondary display for laptops. At $240, the LapLift is affordable enough for frequent laptop warriors who would like multiple display set-ups. More »

From Htcyou: The Beam was first leaked as the “Halo i8520,” but Samsung officially calls it the “Beam,” the world’s first Android smartphone with a built-in DLP projector. More »

At Mobile World Congress, Samsung announced its own operating system, Bada, which is powering the upcoming Wave smartphone. More »

From Htcyou: With a customized UI reminiscent of Samsung’s own Bada OS, the i8520 is scheduled for Asia and Europe in Q3 and has great technical features like Android 2.1, 3.7″ AMOLED, an 8Mp Camera, and a Pico projector. More »

According to PlusPlasticElectronics, electronics company Samsung will be releasing a OLED transparent screen laptop within the next twelve months. More »

From Htcyou: IDC reports that 174.2 million smartphones were shipped in 2009, an increase of 15.1% over 2008 shipments. The top five manufacturers were Nokia, RIM, Apple, HTC, and Samsung. Meanwhile, Google’s Nexus One sales have remained steady but disappointing at 80,000 for the month of January. More »

From Htcyou: Just announced today by surging South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung, the M100S is a high-end Android smartphone, running Eclair 2.1 and featuring an AMOLED display. In March, Koreans will be able to pick them up from SK Telecom. The Nexus One is presently the only smartphone in the world that has Eclair 2.1, so the M100S is the first non-Google branded unit to receive the latest Android build. More »

As we near Apple’s Wednesday event, I have been thinking more about what I would do with the Apple Tablet. If the speculations are correct, and the device will be a family sharing bulletin board, casual gaming handheld, multimedia player, and on-line journal reader, then it could be useful for some middle-class households, but personally, I have no practical application for it, and I doubt that many Westerners under the age of 35 do either.
