If I were Google, here would be my ambitious shortlist of improvements that I would make to Google Wave. When it comes to social networking sites, I have to admit that I am kind of e-slutty and all over the place. Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter…you name it and I am pretty much all over it. Okay, I’m not usually this much of a hater…scratch that, yes I am. With that said, the new TwitterPeek seems like a huge exercise in WTF. Last year while playing for a basketball league with a bunch of my friends, I updated game stats, schedules, among other things with my teammates through Facebook instead of traditional email, not because I didn’t want to but because it was easier and I didn’t have their email addresses. Every one of them had a Facebook account they checked more often than their emails. It wasn’t anything new, I was already following a trend that others had been doing for months on end. Plus, it was easier since most of them checked their Facebook messages more often than their emails. It’s a growing trend among users of social networking sites and it’s a trend that is likely to kill email, says a new Wall Street Journal report. More »
Here’s some surprising news: more women are flocking to social networking sites than men. The only site that attracts more male than female seems to be Digg.
According to Mark Brooks, an analyst in social networking and online dating, the main factor seems to be safety. The economy may have hit some companies hard, but that’s good news for Facebook because they can hire a slew of new employees for cheap. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, says they’re looking increase their staff by 50% and this is a great time to do so, “No one else has been hiring. It’s been a great environment for us because the economy has helped out.”
Even though he’s announced they’re looking to increase their staff, he said they’ll do so slowly, unlike other high profile companies like Google, which doubled its staff after going public in 2005. Zuckerberg also hasn’t said anything about costs or spending in the upcoming year.
Facebook currently has over 1,000 employees and over $716 million in funding, even after acquiring some companies over the past year, most recently FriendFeed for $47.5 million. More »
