From Htcyou: After a lackluster start to the new year, HTC is hoping that a robust Q2 will propel the company to a resurgent finish to 2010. HTC had expected Q1 revenues to be lower than the previous quarter, but with the eagerly anticipated releases of the Desire, the Legend, and other unconfirmed Android smartphones in the spring and down the line, business should be bustling from here onwards. From Htcyou: Hindsight has a way of embarrassing analysts. Take Doug Anmuth (Barclay Capital) who predicted that Google would “move 5 to 6 MILLION Nexus One Handsets in 2010.” Despite the Nexus One’s inability to capture the consumers’ hearts, Google’s first smartphone is still one of the most important in Android history even though it is not an “iPhone killer.” More »

From Htcyou: HTC has been one of the fastest growing technology companies over the past three years, yet much of the public in the western world knows little about this Taiwanese firm. As 2010 moves along, HTC’s relative obscurity will be replaced by recognition and acclaim. Formerly just an original design manufacturer (ODM), which supplied handheld devices like PDAs and smartphones to big name clients, HTC officially launched its own branded smartphone in 2006 with the Blackberry-like Excalibur. In 2007, HTC released its preemptive counter to the iPhone, the Touch (Windows Mobile 6), which was generally criticized for its poor TouchFLO UI, mediocre screen, and lack of 3G. Years later, after significant maturity, together with Google and its Android operating system, HTC is preparing to compete against the established smartphone hierarchy in North America. More »
Has the iPhone lost it’s luster? This past week, after all the Droid and HTC news with Verizon, I’ve been considering leaving AT&T and the iPhone behind and moving to an Android based phone on the Sprint network because of the Employee family plan discounts (which are awesome).
I currently have an iPhone 3G, pay for a text messaging plan, and data, while sharing the minutes with my family (4 extra lines). The monthly bill comes out to around $170 (after taxes), and that’s not including data or texting on any other phone besides mine. At the same time, the Sprint Everything Plus Referral Program, offers 1600 minutes, unlimited texting and data for every line (5 lines) for around $155 before taxes (should be between $175-180 after taxes). That’s a big difference considering my siblings all want texting on their phones and one of them needs data cuz she’s doesn’t use her computer much. So, what’s holding me back from going through with this plan? The high ETF fees. More »
Technology research and consulting firm, the Yankee Group warns that mobile service providers are losing profits because they use heavy subsidies to attract customers. If you don’t know what carrier subsidies are, then I’ll explain. Mobile phone carriers offer phones that usually cost $100 to $600, but they always offer a 2 year contract price. Basically, the carrier pays the manufacturer of the phone the majority of the price and you only pay a small fraction. The carriers do this because they have you locked into a contract and they will end up breaking even. More »
Just today, there have been two big reports regarding the Android mobile platform. First, Sprint announced the arrival of a new Android handset, the Samsung Moment. It will feature a AMOLED touchscreen, slide out keyboard and 3.2 megapixel camera. Second, the Wall Street Journal just reported that Dell might be building an Android mobile phone for AT&T. This news comes right after Verizon strikes a deal with Google to bring Android handsets to its service.
So, you can see, Android is quickly become a hot topic. I think that in the long term, it could potentially dethrone the iPhone to become the most widespread mobile platform and I’ve got a couple reasons why. More »
Lately I’ve been getting more and more frustrated with ATT. First of all whenever I make a phone call, the other person can’t hear me. I have to hang up, then call them back or have them call me. I thought it was a problem with my phone but the problem comes and goes with others on the AT&T network as well. The only reason I’m still with AT&T is because of the iPhone and my current family plan. The plan ends in the summer but it be extremely difficult for me to get rid of the iPhone. I’ve been using it for the past few years and couldn’t imagine not using it anymore. More »
Dan Hesse must be a huge Michael Jordan fan or has been watching the Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony yesterday because when Charlie Rose asked him about how the Palm Pre is fairing against Apple’s iPhone, he said the iPhone needs to be put in a separate category, that it’s almost like comparing it to Michael Jordan. Here’s the Q&A:
Q: Is the Palm Pre making a dent into the iPhone market?
A: Aaah… It’s-it’s doing well, but you can almost put the iPhone, to be fair, in a separate category. The Apple brand and that device have done so well, it’s almost not… it’s like comparing someone to Michael Jordan.
Sprint is on a roll this summer carrying some of the most talked about phones. Now, they’re adding another to that list. Sprint announced the HTC Hero will be available for $179.99 after $50 in instant savings and a $100 mail-in-rebate on October 11th. The Hero loses the chin, the bottom portion of the phone that curves up. It’s been on every HTC Android based phone.
With the addition of the Hero, Sprint now has three really good smart phones running on 3 different OS. Talk about giving you variety. It’ll be available on October 11th at all Sprint locations as well as Best Buy locations across the country. More »
