Okay, I’m not usually this much of a hater…scratch that, yes I am. With that said, the new TwitterPeek seems like a huge exercise in WTF. According to CNet, the device, which launched today is the first gadget solely dedicated to tweeting. Translation: There’s no email, no texting, no web browser — just tweeting. More »

Last year while playing for a basketball league with a bunch of my friends, I updated game stats, schedules, among other things with my teammates through Facebook instead of traditional email, not because I didn’t want to but because it was easier and I didn’t have their email addresses. Every one of them had a Facebook account they checked more often than their emails. It wasn’t anything new, I was already following a trend that others had been doing for months on end. Plus, it was easier since most of them checked their Facebook messages more often than their emails. It’s a growing trend among users of social networking sites and it’s a trend that is likely to kill email, says a new Wall Street Journal report. More »
Here’s some surprising news: more women are flocking to social networking sites than men. The only site that attracts more male than female seems to be Digg.
According to Mark Brooks, an analyst in social networking and online dating, the main factor seems to be safety. Brooks says that social networking sites allow females, those looking to expand their social network, the chance to get to know people around them before ever getting the chance to date or interact with them on a more personal level. Facebook and Twitter have hit all time highs in terms of usage and popularity with Twitter recently hitting the $1 billion value. Both companies have been propelled by the advent of smartphone apps and widgets across other sites. What’s annoyed me most about many of these widgets is the devices they can now be found in, photo frames and televisions.
I don’t know about most users but I don’t want Facebook or Twitter on my TV, that’s what my computer and smartphone is for. For these manufacturing companies, it makes sense to include widgets of the most popular social networks in their devices, they become more attractive to buy but if you’re the consumer, do you really need your photo frame to display all your tweets or do you need to play with your FB account while watching TV? It doesn’t seem like Twitter will be adopting an advertising scheme anytime soon to bring in revenue. Despite a lack of a revenue model, 20% Twitter users are mentioning brand names and are looking for brand information on Twitter. The research comes out of Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology. More »
This past week Facebook released a new feature, very similar to Twitter’s tagging service, where you can attach @ with a user’s name and they’ll be notified of the tag. This obviously begs the question, is Facebook trying to be more like Twitter? Many will argue and say yes they are but it won’t happen. More »
Last week Motorola introduced their new social networking phone with a new software to take advantage of all its functionalities. Motorola is hoping the new phone, the Cliq (maybe going after a cliquey social networking crowd?) will be the beginning to their resurgence to the top. Motorola has fallen from the top as the number one and they need something big. But the Cliq isn’t the only thing that’s new on Motorola’s end, they also have a new software called Blur. More »
Using Twitter and Facebook to alert everyone of everything you are doing is not only annoying but dangerous. Those who tend to constantly write what they are up to are easier to track, therefore, letting burglars know when you’ll be out or away. Duh right? Except some folks don’t get it.
A survey conducted by British-based Legal & General on 2,092 social media users showed that almost four in ten (38%) of people using social networking sites post details on holiday plans and 33 percent put details about a weekend away from home. It was also found that a lot of social network users don’t really know their “friends”. More »
Samsung has finally brought full touch screen on their phones and they are more colorful than ever. Samsung’s new ‘Corby’ phone is focusing mainly on social networking like INQ phones, except the Corby has Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. To make the phones appeal to the younger crowd, Samsung has designed them with very vibrant colors.
Some of the basic colors are Jamaican Yellow, Cupid Pink, Minimal White, and Festival Orange. The more important features are the 2.8 inch QVGA screen and the support for EDGE and Quad- band networks. The Corby will be arriving to many cities in Europe in the middle of September. It will cost about 150 Euros which is roughly $215 USD. Hopefully, the kids or the parents are willing to dish out that much for a social networking phone, if not Samsung may have to take their phone elsewhere. More »
Looks Twitter won’t be a part of some of the major sporting events this year. Yesterday, the NFL said players or their representatives are not allowed to use social media, mainly Twitter, during the game, but it’s okay before and after games. Today, we find out that the US Open will not allow players to communicate with the outside world through social media. Both have their reasons, obviously.
For the NFL, players are paid millions to focus on the game, not their Twitter tweets and so it makes sense to ban players from playing with their phones, while they should be focused on the game. But that’s not it. While Twittering has become extremely popular with NFL players, some players have been fine for criticizing the team. San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Comartie was fined $2,500 for complaining about the food service at training camp. On the Tennis, it’s a slightly different story. More »
Twitter grew from one of the smallest start ups to a powerful social networking site that people use all over the world. It seems almost as if Twitter was famed overnight. Among Twitterers, the personal ones, the celebrities and even companies, no one has taken more advantage of Twitter than the Broadway musical Next to Normal. They performed the entire play via tweets, about 5 tweets a day and attracted thousands of new fans for the growing Broadway show.
Next to Normal, is a play about a suburban family whose mother suffers from bipolar disorder. It attracted lots of attention and praise but was selling tickets at 72% capacity. After six weeks of the show’s opening, the Twitter production had over 30,000 followers, tweeting lines from all the characters and offering audio links whenever a a musical number came up. More »
Twitter and Facebook have become such a valuable tool for many. The need for news on the go and the ability to share that news with friends and others, have made Twitter and Facebook the go to social networking sites. After Marines, posted in Afghanistan started to use Facebook to give insight into their war experiences, it took on a whole new meaning. People were able to experience a small piece of the war, where as before soldiers had limited communications with friends and loved ones. Law enforcement officers here in the states want to be able to do something similar; make it easier to understand the people, interact with them and get help in catching criminals.
The Police Department of Pineville, Louisiana have opened up Facebook and Twitter accounts to want to connect with their residents. The department is hoping to use the social networking sites to let people know about the latest accidents, closures, even information about a suspect. While I think this is a great way to interact with the public, cops shouldn’t think this is a way to solve all the problems in a community. More »

Jimmy Fallon or Ashton Kutcher? Who’s the bigger nerd? Who owns the most gadgets? With the explosion of Twitter and gadgets, these two stand out, and I’ve been trying to figure out which one deserves the title - King of Celebrity Nerds.
I’ve been staying up late to watch Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. It took some time to get used to Jimmy Fallon. In the beginning he always seemed nervous and uncomfortable but he had gadgets on his show and that kept me around for some time before his material and guests started getting better.
Kutcher has always something interesting to say through his Twitter and has the most followers and has even defeated CNN Breaking News in gaining most followers within a certain time frame. More »
