Some will say that the Motorola Droid is boxy and ugly, but I find it understated and sort of handsome. The Droid is Motorola’s biggest star and is about to be followed up by the almost identical looking Droid 2. Over in China, a Droid clone has appeared that looks the part, but tragically, it runs Windows Mobile 6.5. More »

From Htcyou: Speaking with Bloomberg, HTC chief financial officer Cheng Hui-ming states that under the right conditions, his company could run its own operating system for its smartphones. Throughout HTC’s history, it has relied on Windows Mobile and Google Android. Were HTC to use a proprietary OS, there are many significant factors to consider. More »

Russian programmers have managed to load Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 ROM onto the HTC HD2, which will never see an official WP7 update. So far, Wireless, GPS, Bluetooth, and nearly everything else is working except the graphics driver and lack of CPU optimization, leading to some lag. More »

Microsoft’s Mix10 conference confirms many crucial things about the company’s agenda: it is turning into Apple but is late to the game. Droves of smartphone zealots are excited about Windows Phone 7’s prospects, yet much of what Microsoft is doing already exists, and worst of all, quite a few of the complaints about Apple’s iPhone will not be addressed by WP7. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 presentation today unveiled nothing that has not been widely rumored for months: there will be no multitasking; Microsoft’s Marketplace store is the only way to obtain WM7 apps; HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to WM7. In a nutshell, Microsoft is following the strictly isolationist iPhone instead of open source Android (surprise!). In more cheerful news, Samsung, Asus, and LG all demoed WM7 devices. More »

Today, Apple filed a massive copyright infringement lawsuit against rival smartphone manufacturer HTC and has requested that all HTC phones be pulled from sale in America. In its suit, Apple has cited almost every model that HTC makes. More »

Microsoft has unveiled its first prototype (made by LG) smartphone running Windows Phone 7. Sure, Windows Phone 7 just released, but that doesn’t mean that Windows Mobile 6.5 is dead just quite yet. Apparently when Windows Phone 7 becomes available for retail, Windows Mobile 6.5 will be called Windows Phone Classic. More »

Most of the attention at Mobile World Congress centers around Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Phone 7 announcement, but HTC is one of the few companies that is still Windows Mobile 6.5 loyalists. The HD Mini, which is a more affordable version of the HTC HD2, runs Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Presumably, the HD Mini will not be upgradable to Windows Phone 7. More »

From Htcyou: LG has a flagship smartphone on the horizon too. Recently, there have been plenty of Motorola and HTC leaks, but an Asian source released this photo of LG’s supposed Arena Max LU9400, which is rumored to have a 1GHz Snapdragon processor by Qualcomm. More »

Rumors are plentiful as Mobile World Congress (Barcelona February 15th) looms closer. The Zune HD has long been speculated to be the device on which Microsoft would build its own smartphone. Now, PPC Geeks is putting its reputation on the line and is making bold claims about insider knowledge surrounding Windows Phone 7. More »

Looks like Sony Ericsson is continuing its “green” crusade by introducing its new business line mobile device called the “Aspen.” Available in Q2 of this year, the housing of the Aspen is made of recycled plastics with a build that is lead-free. It also comes with an e-manual to cut paper use. This is all part of Sony Ericsson’s “GreenHeart” campaign. More »
