WiFi arrived to 42nd street in downtown manhattan just yesterday, between 42nd and 43rd streets, compliments of Yahoo. Now, Google has decided to give out free WiFi in 47 US airports for the holiday season. Looks like Microsoft and Yahoo may not be working together as closely as many thought. News coming out directly from Yahoo’s senior director Burke Culligan at the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference, says that Yahoo may let users choose which search engine they want to run on their pages. Google can’t seem to stay out of the news these days. After the fiasco with Apple and Google Voice, Google is being challenged in a different area of their business, online digital books, by tech giants Yahoo!, Microsoft and Amazon. But why are Microsoft and Yahoo! so concerned, online books don’t affect them much, if at all?

If you weren’t aware, Google cut a $125 million book settlement with publishers and authors to provide scanned copies of library and textbooks to create an online archive. Part of the deal also included Google giving a percentage of the ad sales revenue to Author’s Guild and Association of American publishers. An anti-trust lawsuit took place led by former big shot lawyer Gary Reback, who prosecuted Microsoft in one of their anti-trust cases. But now, the three tech giants also want to stop Google from going forward with the online digital books archive, each with their own motive. More »


Bing.com, Microsoft’s latest search engine, has continued to grow for a second straight month while Google has continued to decline. According to comScore, Bing had a 8.9 percent search queries in the U.S. in the month of July, which is a 0.5 percent increase since June and a 0.9 percent increase since May.

Google and Yahoo both lost market share during the month of July. Google and Yahoo lost 0.3 percent market share, with down to 64.7 percent and Yahoo down to 19.3 percent. Microsoft and Yahoo have both recently announced Bing as the main search engine for both companies, which equals a 28.2 market share, which is not much higher than the 28 percent share in June. But will this increase for the second straight month help Bing when they take on Yahoo’s loss of share? More »
