If you haven’t been swept up in Apple news lately, you’ll know that Microsoft is set to release their Zune HD tomorrow. The Zune HD will be the only PMP available from Microsoft, as the regular Zunes will no longer be manufactured.
Dell, is making the Zune HD even more attractive offering 15% off the MSRP. That’s a pretty good deal for a brand new device. If you’ve been deciding which device to get, between the Zune and the new iPod Touch, maybe Dell’s 15% off will make you lean towards the Zune HD. More »
Official word out of the Microsoft camp is they will not be selling the Zune HD outside of the United States. A Microsoft spokesperson had this to say to ArsTechnica:
“For the time being the Zune HD device will remain US-only. Right now we are focused on deploying an exciting service in the form of Zune Video to 18 markets. We are looking at potential future hardware experiences for these markets, but do not have anything to announce right now.”
The original Zune never hit the overseas market either. The closest Microsoft came to releasing the Zune was releasing it in Canada and that hardly counts as overseas. After the Zune HD was announced, Microsoft made another announcement earlier this month saying the original Zune models (4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 80GB, and 120GB) were no longer going to be sold, which meant the Zune HD is going to be the only music player available from Microsoft. In a not-so surprising move, both Sony and Microsoft want apps and an app store for their platforms and are now targeting iPhone developers. First, let’s talk about Microsoft. With the Zune HD announcement, Microsoft made it clear they’re willing to compete with the iPod Touch and have created a marvelous device but the Zune fails where the iPod Touch succeeds, the availability of apps. But Microsoft wants to change that. John Gruber, Daring Fireball, says he received an email from an iPhone developer who was contacted by Microsoft to bring his Twitter app over to the Microsoft, possibly for the Zune HD for ” a bucket of money.” More »
Now that Microsoft has given us the official release date for the Zune HD, there’s rumors swirling about the impending Apple iPod Event taking place on September 7th, around the same time it’s been held in previous years. Microsoft missed out on a great opportunity to upstage Apple with their Zune HD, if they could have released it a week or two before Apple’s iPod event but in Microsoft fashion, they’ll find themselves looking up at Apple once again. Apple needs to be worried about the Zune HD. Take a look at the video from a gdgt launch party. It looks pretty sweet.
More Zune HD news is coming out. Cnet has seen the latest build of the Zune HD and praises it for the hardware, video playback and music player. It’s also comparable to the iPhone Touch in features and speed, which is saying a lot considering the iPod Touch is now the gold standard in PMPs. More »
Microsoft has finally released official press release pictures of their upcoming Zune HD. It has a very simple color combination, black and silver. It doesn’t look that bad at all. Could it be that Microsoft finally has a product on their hands that doesn’t look horrible and functions properly? More Pics after the break. More »
More news is coming out on Microsoft’s Zune HD. Engadget says a Software Engineer at Microsoft spoke to Neowin.net and announced the price and possible increase in hard drive capacity for the upcoming Zune HD.
The rumored price for the base 16 GB model will be between $250- $280. If that price point stands, then the Microsoft Zune HD will cost less then the comparable 16 GB iPod Touch, which retails at $299. More »
